South-East Magdelaine Cay is the largest; parts of it, as well as North-East Herald Cay, have thick forests of " Pisonia grandis " and " Cordia subcordata " trees.
Introduced rabbits destroyed the forest understory on Cabbage Tree Island; this both increased the vulnerability of the petrels to natural predators and left them vulnerable to the sticky fruits of the birdlime tree ( " Pisonia umbellifera " ), a native plant.
With 15 feet of rain a year, yet as much sunshine as Hawaii, Palmyra is a rare, " wet " atoll able to sustain life and vegetation, including one of the last remaining undisturbed stands of Pisonia grandis beach forest in the world.
It is postulated that the'nucleus'old growth Pisonia grandis forest pattern ( with trees up to 23m high and 2.4m trunk diameter ) is in the central western part of this cay and is able to provide identification of the older forested sections of the island.
The understory is largely absent here, formed only by scattered " Celtis paniculata ", " Ficus opposita " and " Pipturus argenteus " with a height of 2 4 m; some " Celtis " also grow higher and emerge through the " Pisonia " canopy.
