An 1881 recipe for Alizarine ink may be found in the " Household Cyclopedia of General Information ".
Alizarine and other mordant colours are mainly used for any goods that have to resist repeated washings or prolonged exposure to light.
However, in the modern dyeing process artificial chemical dyes ( aniline ) like alizarine red, napthol and indigo are used to obtain the red, blue and other colour effects.
The leaves also contain a range of hydroxybenzoic acids : gallic acid and its ethyl ester, gentisic acid, anthranilic acid, protocatechuic acid, and ellagic acid ( alizarine yellow ).
The chemical name for the pigment is alizarin, of the anthraquinone-group, and was used to make the alizarine ink in 1855 by the Professor Leonhardi of Dresden, Germany.
