Cloop is mostly used as a convenient way to compress conventional file systems onto Live CDs.
Many BBCs use the cloop ( compressed loopback ) driver which provided a compressed read-only filesystem for Linux.
You can even use compression on the device ( see cloop and SquashFS, though these are read-only solutions ).
Cloop was originally written for the Levanta Bootable Business Card by Rusty Russell, but is now maintained by Klaus Knopper, the author of Knoppix.
Many Linux based live CDs use a compressed filesystem image, often with the cloop compressed loopback driver, or squashfs compressed filesystem, generally doubling effective storage capacity, although slowing application start up.
