Dillwyn is credited with discovering several species of the Conferva genus.
He described a number of phycological species; " Haematococcus lacustris ", " Volvox lacustris " and " Conferva mammiformis " being a few examples.
He had been nominated to the Linnean Society of London; had contributed to Dickson's " Fasciculi "; was acknowledged in a number of other works; and had had a species of algae, " Conferva brownii " ( now " Aegagropila linnaei " ) named after him by Lewis Weston Dillwyn.
The plant genus " Acharia ", several plants species ( e . g ., " Rosa acharii " and " Conferva acharii " ), and one insect, " Tortrix achariana " have all been named after Acharius; likewise, the Acharius Medal is awarded for lifetime achievement in lichenology.
