The Cronquist system, 1981, placed the family in the order Violales ( together with Dioncophyllaceae ).
It is also recommended that " Drosophyllum " be considered in a monotypic family outside the rest of the Droseraceae, probably more closely allied to the Dioncophyllaceae.
A close relationship between this family and the family Dioncophyllaceae ( containing the carnivorous species " T . peltatum " ) is supported by similar pollen and petiole structure.
Recent molecular and biochemical studies, however, place it in the monotypic "'Drosophyllaceae "', as recommended by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, and allied with the Dioncophyllaceae ( " Triphyophyllum " ) and Ancistrocladaceae.
