While the approval authority for DSSM, DMSM, JSCM, JSAM and JMUA is delegated to inferior DoD officials : the DDSM can only be awarded by the Secretary of Defense.
As a joint award, oak leaf clusters traditionally associated with Army and Air Force awards are also used for multiple awards of the DMSM to Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel.
