The southern giant petrel was first described as " Macronectes giganteus " by Johann Friedrich Gmelin, in 1789, based on a specimen from Staten Island off Tierra del Fuego.
No mortality of seabirds or marine mammals was recorded as a result of fishing for Antarctic toothfish in 2011 12 and only two seabirds ( Southern Giant Petrels Macronectes giganteus ) have been killed as a result of fishing in the Ross Sea since 1996 / 97.
The name applied by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1971 refers both to the difficulty of travel and to the presence of a large breeding colony of Giant Petrels ( " Macronectes giganteus " ), sometimes known as " Breakbones ".
Bird species found on the islands include : Magellanic penguin ( " Spheniscus magellanicus " ), or red peek penguin, the southern giant petrel ( " Macronectes giganteus " ), kelp gull or Dominican gull ( " Larus dominicanus " ), red-legged cormorant ( " Phalacrocorax gaimardi ", also known as the red-legged shag, red-footed cormorant, red-footed shag, Gaimard s cormorant or grey cormorant ), and southern royal albatross ( " Diomedea epomophora " ).
