"Mutinus elegans " is saprobic deriving nutrients by breaking down dead or dying organic matter.
"Phallus rubicundus " is often confused with the similar " Mutinus elegans ", but the latter species does not have a clearly separated cap, and instead bears its gleba on the apex of its pointed stalk.
Some related species such as " Phallus impudicus " or " Mutinus caninus " are considered to be edible ( or even delicacies ) in the immature egg stage; however, the foul smell of stinkhorns at maturity would likely deter most individuals from eating them.
