The tetroxide and a related compound potassium osmate are important oxidants for chemical synthesis, despite being very poisonous.
It can efficiently remove traces or excess amounts of chlorine, bromine, iodine, hypochlorite salts, osmate esters, chromium trioxide and potassium permanganate.
