Awarded a senior studentship, he worked for a year on Permian amphibians with Walter Frederick Whittard and for two years at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he studied reader in palaeozoology in 1944 and Woodwardian Professor of Geology in 1955.
He participated in the Greenland expedition of Gunnar S鋠e-S鰀erbergh in 1932 and was appointed assistant in the Department of Palaeozoology of the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm in 1937; he eventually succeeded Erik Stensi?as professor and head of the department in 1960, retiring in 1972.
