Several of the " Schomburgkia " species were transferred into the genus " Myrmecophila " by Robert Allen Rolfe in 1917.
Species formerly placed in the genus " Schomburgkia " have been moved either to the genus " Laelia " or " Myrmecophila ".
The genus was named in 1838 by Lindley, with " Schomburgkia crispa ", a large sized, hot growing plant found in the tropical areas of Venezuela, Surinam, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador, as the type species.
Fifteen feet above the path, a six-foot spray of amethyst Schomburgkia, native to the tropical Americas, hangs suspended from tentacle-like roots that cling to a 200-year-old Alga Robo tree with canopy so dense it reduces the scorching tropical sunlight to a warm, hazy caress.
According to C醩sio van den Berg et al ., who studied their phylogeny, " Leptotes " is very closely related to " Loefgrenianthus " and both situated between " Pseudolaelia " and the genus which once used to be classified as " Schomburgkia ", by some now considered part of " Laelia ".
