This came to be known as " M鋎ler's Square ", after the lunar selenographer Johann M鋎ler.
About 10 years following his death, his remaining drawings and sketches were published in a second volume by the Austrian selenographer Rudolf K鰊ig.
By profession, he was a mechanical engineer and civil servant, but his reputation rests on his achievements as an amateur astronomer, particularly as a selenographer.
His sketches from 1884 to 1896 are now in the possession of the BAA . He is best known as a careful and indefatigable selenographer, and for this work his artistic skill eminently qualified him.
On some older maps the crater Gassendi A was called Clarkson, after the British amateur astronomer and selenographer Roland L T Clarkson, but this name is not officially recognized by the IAU and the name has been removed.
