The middle layer envelopes the strap muscles ( sternohyoid, sternothyroid, thyrohyoid, and omohyoid muscles ).
Branches from the ansa cervicalis innervate most of the infrahyoid muscles, including the sternothyroid muscle, sternohyoid muscle, and the omohyoid muscle.
This retraction is aided by the long sternoglossus muscle, which is formed by the fusion of the sternohyoid and the hyoglossus, and does not attach to the hyoid.
Beneath these superficial structures are the sternohyoid and sternothyroid, which, together with the anterior margin of the sternocleidomastoid, conceal the lower part of the common carotid artery.
Several other structures pass or sit over it; the sternohyoid and sternothyroid muscle s stretch along its length, and the thyroid gland sits below this; with the isthmus of the gland overlying the second to fourth rings.
