Australian botanists Lawrie Johnson and Barbara Briggs placed " Conospermum " in the subtribe Conosperminae along with the genus " Synaphea " in their 1975 monograph " On the Proteaceae : the evolution and classification of a southern family ".
In 1998 Sara Hoot and Andrew Douglas analysed chloroplast sequences and found that " Cenarrhenes " was sister to a clade comprising the three genera " Stirlingia ", " Conospermum " and " Synaphea ".
The Swan Coastal Plain is a particularly important centre for certain types of plants, including " Banksia ", but also " Caladenia " orchids and " Leucopogon " shrubs, indeed some genera, such as the " Dryandra " series of " Banksia " and the " Synaphea " flowers are found nowhere else in the world.
