After the coup of the Whiggamore Raid, the Kirk Party regained control in Scotland.
In Scotland it is another word for the Kirk Party, which took temporary control of national affairs in 1648, after a coup known as the'Whiggamore Raid '.
Those Covenanters who had opposed the Engagement, seized the opportunity presented by the loss of credibility suffered by the Engagers and launched the Whiggamore Raid which led to their successful capture of Edinburgh.
The credibility of the Engagers was undermined by their armies defeat at the battle of Preston, and members of the Kirk party in the south west organised the Whiggamore Raid that resulted in the overthrow of the Engagers party after a short civil war.
These, with the accessions of force which were daily arriving from different parts of the kingdom, were quite sufficient to have put down the insurrection in the west; but instead of marching, Lanark, to the surprise of every person, proceeded through East Lothian towards the eastern borders to meet up with Sir George Munro, who was retiring upon Whig party in what was known as the Whiggamore Raid.
