• The maxillary sinus may drain into the mouth via an abnormal opening, an oroantral fistula, a particular risk after tooth extraction.
• Oroantral fistula ( OAF ) is an abnormal condition where the maxillary sinus is exposed to the oral cavity through an epithelialised fistula.
• Other methods like radiographs ( occipitomental, OPG and periapical views ) can also be used to confirm the presence of any oroantral fistulas.
• This is particularly important following the removal of upper wisdom teeth, as their nerve can extend up into the maxillary sinus, and inadequate healing may lead to a permanent oroantral fistula.
