Despite the similar British common names, they are not so closely related to the " Cepphus " guillemots, which form the tribe Cepphini.
They have distinctly white bellies, thicker and longer bills than " Cepphus ", and form very dense colonies on cliffs during the reproductive season.
It closely resembles the other members of the genus " Cepphus ", particularly the black guillemot, which is slightly smaller and lacks dark wing lines.
The name " Pituilaktok " comes from the Inuktitut name for a local bird known in English as the black guillemot ( " cepphus grylle " ), " pitiula ".
In addition diving birds such as rhinoceros auklet ( " Cerorhinca monocerata " ), pigeon guillemots ( " Cepphus columba " ) and endangered marbled murrelet ( " Brachyramphus marmoratus " ) frequent the surrounding seas.
