• Despite the similar British common names, they are not so closely related to the " Cepphus " guillemots, which form the tribe Cepphini.
• They have distinctly white bellies, thicker and longer bills than " Cepphus ", and form very dense colonies on cliffs during the reproductive season.
• It closely resembles the other members of the genus " Cepphus ", particularly the black guillemot, which is slightly smaller and lacks dark wing lines.
• The name " Pituilaktok " comes from the Inuktitut name for a local bird known in English as the black guillemot ( " cepphus grylle " ), " pitiula ".
