• It comprises dark grey shale and siltstone with subordinate sandstone and some local thin bentonitic and tuffaceous beds.
• Chinle Formation ( Triassic ) : Purple, white, grey and locally green bentonitic shale weathering to clay.
• Fossils have been found from the park in a bentonitic paleosol that is part of the Campanian Wapiti Formation.
• As the ammonites died, they sank to the bottom and were buried by layers of bentonitic mud that eventually became shale.
• The bands of colour visible in the exposed bedrock are made of dark gray shales, greenish and gray sandstones, bentonitic clays and thin bands of ironstone.
• The formation is described by W . G . Pierce as gray to white clayey sand, drab sandstone, gray and brown shale, and bentonitic clay.
