• Fanwort is a submerged, sometimes floating, but often rooted, freshwater perennial plant with short, fragile rhizomes.
• Fanwort stems become brittle in late summer, which causes the plant to break apart, facilitating its distribution and invasion of new water bodies.
• However, exotic and invasive plants such as fanwort and aquatic coontail also inhabit the area and have altered the habitat in the vicinity of the lake.
