• Ficin is a reagent that is used in blood banking to enhance or modify certain immunological reactions.
• This is due to the ficin in the latex ( sap ) of the fruit, particularly if it is unripened.
• Also, solutions of exogenous proteolytic enzymes ( papain, bromelin or ficin ) can be injected to augment the endogenous enzymes.
• For example, if the sample of papain contains 97 % of papain as the main ingredient, then ficin should be very close to that amount.
• The fig actually produces an enzyme called ficain ( also known as ficin ) which digests the dead wasps and the fig absorbs the nutrients to create the ripe fruits and seeds.
