• Designed by Samuel Humphreys, she was built along merchant vessel lines and included trysail mast and gaffsail on all three masts to enable her to work to windward in strong winds.
• Sometime in the 1970s " Esmeralda's " rigging was changed to a four-masted barquentine by replacing the fore gaffsail ( course sail ) by two main staysails.
