• The condition, known as hyponatraemia, is caused by the dilution of sodium in the body.
• ORS is safe and effective for nearly all children with hyponatraemia, an exception being children with edema for whom ORS provides too much sodium.
• Children with diarrhea who drink mostly water or overly dilute drinks with too little salt may develop hyponatraemia ( serum sodium less than 130 mmol / liter ).
• Thiazide diuretics increase the excretion of sodium and potassium ions and decrease the excretion of calcium ions and uric acid so they are contraindicated in patients with hyponatraemia, hypokalaemia, hypercalcaemia and hyperuricaemia.
• Sodium in drinks might help to avoid hyponatraemia ( low sodium ), but only after sustaining athletic activity for more than four hours; a sports drink containing sodium may be appropriate for recovery from intense and prolonged training or competition.
• Doctors who treated a 15-year-old female suffering from mephedrone intoxication suggested in " The Lancet " that, like MDMA, mephedrone may promote serotonin-mediated release of antidiuretic hormone, resulting in hyponatraemia and an altered mental state.
