• There are currently five species in this genus including the type species mammalian orthoreovirus.
• Although less well studied than orthoreovirus and orbivirus, considerable structural and biochemical studies have been undertaken to characterize phytoreoviruses, which in general infect plants.
• The "'Abney virus "'is a virus, isolated from an anal swab of a child with upper respiratory illness, which became a prototype strain of Orthoreovirus type 3.
• Diseases associated with this genus include : mild upper respiratory tract disease, gastroenteritis, biliary atresia . mammalian orthoreovirus type 3 ( strain dearing-T3D ) induces cell death preferentially in transformed cells and therefore displays inherent oncolytic properties.
