• The peculiar retractor maxillae muscle of Typhlops is replaced by a double-bellied enlarged m . pterygoideus.
• Behind this groove is a rough surface, for the insertion of the internal pterygoid muscle ( " Pterygoideus internus " ).
• The furrows articulate with the pterygoid plates, while the grooved intermediate area completes the lower part of the pterygoid fossa and gives origin to a few fibers of the Pterygoideus internus.
• The angle of the mandible, which may be either inverted or everted, is marked by rough, oblique ridges on each side, for the attachment of the masseter laterally, and the pterygoideus internus ( medial pterygoid muscle ) medially; the stylomandibular ligament is attached to the angle between these muscles.
• The superior or temporal portion, convex from above downward, concave from before backward, forms a part of the temporal fossa, and gives attachment to the Temporalis; the inferior or infratemporal, smaller in size and concave, enters into the formation of the infratemporal fossa, and, together with the infratemporal crest, affords attachment to the Pterygoideus externus.
