• Efficacy of laparoscopy is inferior to open surgery in certain conditions such as pyloromyotomy for Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.
• When used to alleviate gastroesophageal reflux symptoms in patients with delayed gastric emptying, it is frequently combined with modification of the pylorus via pyloromyotomy or pyloroplasty.
• It has a success rate of 85-89 % compared to nearly 100 % for pyloromyotomy, however it requires prolonged hospitalization, skilled nursing and careful follow up during treatment.
• In one cohort of 157 newborns who were given erythromycin for pertussis prophylaxis, seven neonates ( 5 % ) developed symptoms of non-bilious vomiting or irritability with feeding and were subsequently diagnosed as having IHPS requiring surgical pyloromyotomy.
