  • Ranids tend to produce globular clusters containing large numbers of eggs whereas bufonids produce long, cylindrical strings.
  • Although the origins of Microhylidae in New Guinea are very similar to the Ranids, there is much more diversity.
  • However, most of the ecological niches filled by frogs had been filled before the ranids and microhylids reached Australia, so only a limited number of species have established.
  • New Guinea and Australia have been absent of Ranids for most of their history, however since the continent's collision with Asia, species have begun to move across.
  • Most true, or ranid, frogs have slim, streamlined bodies, pointed heads, long hind legs ending in webbed feet and smooth, moist, brown or green skins.

  • The wood frog has garnered attention by biologists over the last century because of its freeze tolerance, relatively great degree of terrestrialism ( for a ranid ), interesting habitat associations ( peat bogs, vernal pools, uplands ), and relatively long-range movements.
  • The name was previously used by Frost " et al . " as a separate genus of ranid frogs that included most of the North American frogs traditionally included in the genus " Rana ", including the American bullfrog and northern leopard frog.
  • Two further species are introduced : the ranid frog " Hoplobatrachus tigrinus " and the endemic, with the exception of " Ptychadena mascareniensis " . 85 species are threatened with extinction, nine of which are considered by the IUCN as critically endangered.
