• Fentanyl was first introduced as an intravenous anesthetic called Sublimaze in the 1960s.
• In addition to the intrathecal patch and injectable Sublimaze, the FDA has approved various immediate release fentanyl products for breakthrough cancer pain ( Actiq / OTFC / Fentora / Onsolis / Subsys / Lazanda / Abstral ).
• The widespread use of fentanyl triggered the production of fentanyl citrate ( the salt formed by combining fentanyl and citric acid in a 1 : 1 stoichiometric ratio ), which entered medical use as a general anaesthetic under the trade name Sublimaze in the 1960s.
