• A subspecies of the Himalayan brown bear ( " Ursus arctos isabellinus " ) was named subspecifically for the colour and is also sometimes known as the isabelline bear.
• It was recently determined that " H . kivuensis " and " H . multifasciatus " are only subspecifically distinct from each other, and the latter was synonymized with the former.
• The status of this form either a distinct species or not even subspecifically distinct from " O . palustris natator "  has remained controversial since; the 2005 third edition of " Mammal Species of the World " does not recognize " O . argentatus " as a separate species, but acknowledges a need for further research.
