• Oenothera, also called sundrops, is a tough July blooming survivor.
• Popularly called sundrops or evening primroses, those in my borders bloom at any time they please.
• So we have a truce : common sundrops are allowed to stay in my borders, but only under highly monitored conditions.
• Among the pass-a-longs was the popular and highly invasive common sundrops ( O . fructicosa; sometimes sold as O . tetragona ).
• On their part, the sundrops found it hard to resist my bare borders and within a few years I started yanking out their shallow, thick roots.
• A result is, in one oasis called Vestal Grove, 90 acres abloom with yellow pimpernel, cream gentian, small sundrops, large-flowered trillium, bloodroot, wild bergamot, hoary puccoon and six-foot bluestem grass.
