- Outside of the sedge family, the name is used for " Typha ", a genus in the Typhaceae family.
- Usually it hides in swamps and reed fields with presence of espada馻 plants ( Typhaceae ) and juncales ( " Scirpus californicus " ).
- It was previously placed alone in the family Sparganiaceae . " Sparganium " is closely related to the Typhaceae and the APG III system ( 2009 ) includes " Sparganium " in that family.
- By the APG III system of 2009, " Sparganium " had been found to be fairly closely related to " Typha ", and so was placed with that genus in family Typhaceae.
- The best known families of which all species tested contain tannin are : Aceraceae, Actinidiaceae, Anacardiaceae, Bixaceae, Burseraceae, Combretaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Ericaceae, Grossulariaceae, Myricaceae for dicot and Najadaceae and Typhaceae in Monocot.
- It did not include the Bromeliaceae and Mayaceae, but had the additional families Prioniaceae ( now included in Thurniaceae ), Sparganiaceae ( now in Typhaceae ), and Hydatellaceae ( now transferred out of the monocots; recently discovered to be an'early-diverging'lineage of flowering plants ).
