• Failure of the ureteropelvic junction to become patent during development is the most frequent cause of bilateral hydronephrosis, particularly in male neonates.
• Contralateral ureteropelvic junction obstruction is found in 3 % to 12 % of infants with multicystic kidney and contralateral vesicoureteral reflux is seen even more often, in 18 % to 43 % of infants.
• Finally, if hydronephrosis is significant and obstruction is suspected, such as a ureteropelvic junction ( UPJ ) or ureterovesical junction ( UVJ ) obstruction, a nuclear imaging study such as a MAG-3 scan is warranted.
• The junction between the pelvis of the kidney and the ureters is known as the "'ureteropelvic junction "'or "'ureteral pelvic junction "', and the junction between the ureter and the bladder is known as the ureterovesical ( ureter-bladder ) junction.
