• In 1931, an electric typewriter was introduced by Varityper Corporation.
• Early typesetters ( like the AM Varityper ) also incorporated it.
• They used an AM VariTyper with changeable fonts to publish the magazine.
• It was called the " Varityper ", because a narrow cylinder-like wheel could be replaced to change the font.
• Like the Varityper with which it competed, the original machine required that material be typed twice if the type was to be justified.
• Its primary function was the original typing and subsequent editing of text intended to be set into type, either on a Linotype machine or on photocomposition equipment from manufacturers such as AM / Varityper, Compugraphic Corporation.
• Along with AM / Varityper and Mergenthaler, Compugraphic was at the vanguard of what was then considered to be a revolution in the graphic arts : " cold type . " Prior to computerized typesetting systems such as those manufactured by Compugraphic, typography for magazines, newspapers and advertising was set using Linotype machines, which physically placed metal type forms ( not unlike those found within manual typewriters ) in line to form the headlines and text of their subjects.
