• They may occur in connection with posterior vitreous detachment or retinal detachment.
• As a posterior vitreous detachment proceeds, adherent vitreous membrane may pull on the retina.
• The vitreous detachment is not the same as a retinal detachment, which is a more serious problem that requires treatment.
• Other eye conditions which appear in the breed include cataracts in juveniles, corneal dystrophy, progressive retinal atrophy and posterior vitreous detachment.
• The eye condition is not serious, common as people age, did not require treatment and is known as a posterior vitreous detachment.
• The vitreous gel undergoes liquefaction ( posterior vitreous detachment or PVD ) and its opacities  visible as floaters  gradually increase in number.
• Floaters are generally harmless, but the sudden onset of recurring floaters may signify a posterior vitreous detachment ( PVD ) or other diseases of the eye.
• Only about 1 in 10, 000 cases of vitreous detachment lead to retinal detachment, but it still is one of the most common causes of retinal detachment.
• When this occurs, usually between age 50 and 70, the back edge of the vitreous will pull forward away from the retina, leading to a " vitreous detachment ".
• A tear in the retina can occur with vitreous detachment, with trauma or eye injury, or in areas at risk for a retinal tear, such as " lattice degeneration ".
• Sometimes, as a result of immune system response to protect the retina, cells converge in the macular area as the vitreous ages and pulls away in posterior vitreous detachment ( PVD ).
• The risk of retinal tears and detachment associated with vitreous detachment is higher in patients with myopic retinal degeneration, lattice degeneration, and a familial or personal history of previous retinal tears / detachment.
• The most effective means of prevention and risk reduction is through education of the initial signs, and encouragement for people to seek ophthalmic medical attention if they have symptoms suggestive of a posterior vitreous detachment.
• Like most invasive surgical procedures, however, vitrectomy carries a risk of complications, including : retinal detachment, anterior vitreous detachment and macular edema  which can threaten vision or worsen existing floaters ( in the case of retinal detachment ).
• If these liquid pockets are close enough to the interface between the vitreous gel and the retina, they can cause complete separation of the vitreous from the retina in a normally occurring process in older humans called posterior vitreous detachment ( PVD ).
