• The nephridia consists of an opening called nephrostome, a long convoluted tubule and another opening called the nephridiopore.
• The nephrostome is covered from the inside with cilia, which push the water, metabolic wastes, unnecessary hormones and other substances into the metanephridium.
• A pair of structures called nephrostomes are located at the back of each septum; a nephric tubule leads from each nephrostome through the septum and into the following segment.
• To me the most recognizable feature of true segments or somites in animals is that each one has a single unit of excretory tissue-see nephridium and nephrostome, though in vertebrates the pronephros regresses.
