• Protogyny is the most common form of hermaphroditism in fish in nature.
• Mature females transform into territorial males upon further growth ( see Protogyny ).
• This is due to the protogyny, or the female s ability to become a male.
• Conversion from male to female is called protandry; conversion from female to male is called protogyny.
• Protandry is when an individual starts out male and becomes female while the reverse condition is known as protogyny, the latter being more common.
• An example of territoriality favoring protogyny occurs when there is a need to protect their habitat and being a large male is advantageous for this purpose.
